Chemical Peels and Carcinoma
Chemical peels can eliminate sunspots and actinic keratosis. They may also be useful in the elimination of squamous cell carcinomas. Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common types of skin cancer, with more than 3 million diagnoses in the United States every year. In some cases, basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer, can also be removed with a chemical peel.
Melanoma, the least common but most deadly type of skin cancer, cannot be removed with chemical peels.
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. If you have unusual growths that you suspect are cancerous, having them evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional is essential. While seldom fatal, squamous cell carcinoma can spread to surrounding tissue. Basal cell carcinoma, also rarely fatal, can spread aggressively as well, which may require more involved and invasive methods of removal.
Where Can Peels be Used?
Chemical peels are most often used on the face, neck, and hands. They can also be used on the chest, back, arms, legs, and even feet. This is dependent on the unique needs and goals of the patient. Addressing surface skin imperfections, growths, and wounds, chemical peels can help to restore a smooth, blemish-free, and attractive appearance to the entire treatment area. They can even be used on more than one area during a single session.
Chemical peels are not intended as a treatment for skin cancer, but they can help to reduce some of the apparent damage that sun exposure has done to the skin.
