I guess we all think of heart disease as a disease of adults and old age. But a recent study done in Leipzig, Germany found evidence that heart disease in obese children may start younger than you think. They studied 61 overweight kids from 8 – 21 and compared them to children with normal weight. The overweight kids had elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, higher LDL, lower HDL and increased blood pressure. They also were found to have a thickening of their left ventricular wall, their hearts main pumping chamber.
The question remains as to how many of these things are reversible in terms of the changes in their heart. Patients beware!
