Many of us are living with stubborn areas of fat or flabby skin in the abdomen area. While there are a couple of procedures that can help to address these issues, how do you know which one is right for you? We have broken down the two most popular procedures for addressing the midsection, tummy tuck and liposuction, to help you determine which one you should consider. Of course, a consultation with Dr. Brueck is the best way to determine which procedure to choose.
You May Benefit from Liposuction if…
You have stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise alone. Patients with no or very minimal skin laxity can often benefit from liposuction alone. During the liposuction procedure, 4-6 very small incisions are created, and a cannula is used to suction out excess fat. Skin must have good quality in order to shrink around the new contour for a natural-looking appearance.
You May Benefit from A Tummy Tuck if…
You have excess, lax skin and fat on the abdomen due to pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or aging. After these life events, the abdominal walls can become loose, causing a bulging appearance. A tummy tuck can remove excess skin and fat, and tighten the abdominal muscles for a slim, strong abdomen. The tummy tuck procedure involves the creation of a horizontal incision made between the hipbones, which will leave scarring. However, over time, this scar will fade.
Oftentimes, patients can benefit from both a tummy tuck and liposuction. These procedures can either be performed at the same time or in separate stages. This will depend on the amount of fat and skin that needs to be removed, the patient’s overall health, and cosmetic goals. A consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon is the best way to determine candidacy.
